MK-1090 Foam Fatigue & Hardness Tester
What the MK-1090 Foam Fatigue & Hardness Tester does
The MK-1090 is a servo-controlled test system that runs dynamic fatigue, indentation hardness and compression tests on flexible polyurethane foam in a single unit. Two interchangeable heads cover the three test families: a Ø250 mm head for fatigue and compression, and a Ø203 mm head for indentation hardness.
Fatigue and hardness belong together. ISO 3385 judges foam durability by measuring thickness and hardness before and after 80,000 load cycles. On the MK-1090 both measurements and the pounding itself run on the same machine, so the before and after values come from the same head, the same load cell and the same setup. How the fatigue test works step by step is explained in how to perform a foam fatigue test.
Test modes and standards
| Test mode | Standards | Head | Main results |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dynamic fatigue | ISO 3385 (Type B), ASTM D3574 Test I3 (A / B / C) | Ø250 mm | Cycle count, peak force, thickness and hardness loss |
| Indentation hardness | ISO 2439 (methods A–E), ASTM D3574 Test B1 | Ø203 mm | Hardness / IFD values; compression factor and hysteresis loss for ISO 2439 E |
| Compression | ISO 3386-1:2025, ASTM D3574 Test C | Ø250 mm | CV40 and CFD50 compression stress (kPa) |
| User-defined | Custom recipes | Either head | Force (N) or compression (%), speed, hold time and cycle count set by the user |
ISO 3385 Type B describes a fatigue tester that measures force with a load cell and controls the repeated pounding automatically, keeping the maximum force in every cycle within 750 ±20 N. The MK-1090 works this way: the load cell tracks the peak force and the servo motion is corrected by the control algorithm.

Standard delivery
Enclosed test unit with 750 W servo and electric cylinder, Ø250 mm fatigue/compression head, Ø203 mm hardness head, 400 × 400 mm perforated table, four specimen holders, load cell, PLC control, 7″ HMI on a separate stand and connection equipment. The MK-1090 comes in one standard configuration.
Indentation hardness on the MK-1090
With the Ø203 mm head, the MK-1090 measures indentation hardness to ISO 2439 methods A to E and ASTM D3574 Test B1. Method B gives the force at 25%, 40% and 65% indentation; method E records the loading and unloading curve and reports the compression factor and hysteresis loss. Because ISO 2439 uses 50 mm specimens and ASTM B1 usually 100 mm, the two methods don’t give directly comparable numbers. How IFD values are read is covered in IFD vs ILD, and how the ASTM and ISO methods map to each other in ASTM D3574 vs ISO.

Frequently asked questions
Can one machine run both fatigue and hardness tests?
Yes. The MK-1090 runs ISO 3385 fatigue with the Ø250 mm head and ISO 2439 or ASTM B1 hardness with the Ø203 mm head. Changing the head switches the test family.
What force range does the MK-1090 measure?
Force is measured with a 100 kg C3 class load cell with ±0.015% FS accuracy. The servo cylinder can produce a nominal thrust of 1.28 kN.
How thick can hardness specimens be?
The clearance between head and table is 160 mm, so specimens up to 100 mm thick, as used in ASTM D3574 Test B1, can be tested.
How are results saved?
The 7″ HMI shows the test as it runs, and test summaries are exported as CSV files over USB.
